Extract from this report

  • As of the end of 2009 in Central Europe (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia), almost 3,700 km of motorways and more than 1,700 km of expressways were in use.

  • We predict that after a slowdown in 2009 the Central European road construction market will revive in 2010. The industry will start to develop at a more rapid pace in 2011 and 2012, with Poland being the main driving force of the market.

  • Taking into account contracts signed and to be signed in 2011, we forecast that a total of 1,520 km of motorways and expressways can be completed in Poland in 2010-2013. Construction of the largest number of new road sections would be in progress in 2011 with completion planned mainly for 2012.

Market commentary by expert

In comparison with Western European countries, the quality of the road network in the Central European region is still poor and has been identified as a serious obstacle to the rapid economic development of the region. Hopefully, over the next few years many new motorway and expressway projects are to be implemented in the countries of the region, and many projects are in the planning stage for the EU perspective 2014-2020. However, in some cases the significant concentration of road works expected in the following years and fierce market competition may create some serious threats to the road construction market.
