The report presents Russian market as a whole and individual federal districts  such as: Central, Volga, Southern, Siberian, Urals, Northwestern and Far East. It focuses on: socioeconomic conditions, retail sales, national and local key retail chains operating in the country. It provides market insight into major retail segments of:

  • grocery
  • consumer electronics
  • DIY
  • clothing and footwear
  • cosmetics and toiletries.

The overview includes segment sales value dating back to 2005 and forecasts up to 2013 as well as the most prevalent chains (listed and presented with profiles).

Special attention is paid to the largest retail players in Russia, both foreign and national. Additionally, many local chains operating on the district level are listed and described. Major M&A deals in the retail sector in the last two years were given together with food and non food retail sales figures in each district, including changes over the years.

Why a report on retail in Russia?

Did you know...
The Southern Federal District (namely Krasnodar) gave birth to one of the largest discounters of Russia - the Magnit grocery chain owned by Tander Company.
The Urals Federal District is home to two chains that have seen countrywide success, namely Monetka (grocery) and SuperStroy (DIY).
While the population of Moscow is about twice the size of St. Petersburg's (the second largest city in the country), the retail sector of the Russian capital is fourfold larger than the one of St. Petersburg.
As of January 2010, 971,000 stalls operated in Russia in the open-air markets.
In addition to being the most populous, the Central Federal District also leads in retail sales per capita ($4,970).
The Central and Northwestern Federal Districts enjoy the best labour market conditions - with two large cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg boasting the lowest unemployment rates, of 1.3% and 2% respectively (Jan-Sep 2010).
In the Volga Federal District, the largest local grocery retailers, in terms of storecount, include Grozd' and Polushka.
There are 1,099 cities in Russia, of which 310 in the Central Federal District.
The share of open-air markets in Russia decreased from 13.5% in 2009 to 12.7% in 2010.
In the first nine months of 2010, the average monthly expenditures on goods and services per capita in the Siberian Federal District amounted to RUB 9,258 ($305) and were the lowest among Russia's Districts.
Sakhalin Province is the most dynamic retail market in the Far East District.
In 2010, Russian consumer electronics and appliances retail sales recovered after a sharp decline in the previous year.
  • Russia is a large and diverse market in terms of affluence, density, development, retail network and many others. This report aims to show Russian market as a whole with a special focus on regional differences.
  • Many companies are still not present in Russia, yet, still considering a possible market entrance, willing to monitor what’s happening there.
  • As the market is very large, it makes it difficult for companies to keep up with all the changes on their own.
  • After several years of observing two-digit growth (above 20%), the last two years (2009-2010) brought weaker retail sales dynamics and financial problems for many companies. It could be discouraging, however, for many potential entrants it could be an opportunity. Thus it’s worth knowing, much more than before, what’s happening in retail in particular Russian federal districts.

Extract from this report

  • The largest retail companies in Russia include the domestic X5 Retail Group ($11.2bn generated in 2010) and Tander ($7.8bn), closely followed by two foreign groups (Auchan and Metro).
  • Generally, the leading national retailers in Russia remain optimistic about the future development of the market. The attitude of local retail operators regarding the future varies considerably from sector to sector. Thus, in grocery retailing, the financial crisis has stimulated market consolidation and the forming of new marriages for local players’ development. On the contrary, in mobile telephony retailing, local players became even more optimistic as the competition changed and such giants as Dixis and Tsifrograd went bankrupt.
  • The Central Federal District remains the largest retail market in the country, accounting for 34% of the country’s total sales in 2010, although it accounts for 4% of Russia’s territory and 37% of the country’s population.

Market commentary by expert

Though the retail industry in Russia demonstrated continuous growth, there was a sharp drop in industry’s growth rates, from 28.1% in 2008 to 4.9% in 2009. In 2010 the retail market expanded by 12.6% compared with the previous year, though in real terms this represented only 4.4% growth.
Despite a degree of retail market recovery, some retailers ceased their operations in the country (Carrefour, Wal-Mart). In addition, several national retail operators went bankrupt in 2010 (e.g., Mir consumer electronics chain). The major victims of the financial crisis were the local retail operators. On the whole, the financial crisis forced the majority of retail operators to focus on the efficiency of their business operations.
The Central Federal District remains the largest retail market in the country, accounting for 34% of Russia’s retail sales in 2010. Its inhabitants enjoy the highest per capita monthly incomes and expenditures on goods and services. The region boasts the lowest unemployment rate in the country. However, the District owes its prosperity mainly to the affluence of Moscow and its vicinity.
