Extract from this report

  • The lists of the best-selling medicines in Russia and Ukraine are dominated by innovative preparations of foreign origin. Domestic companies are relatively generic. They do not have enough money for investment in new drug development and do not usually, therefore, manufacture innovative preparations.
  • The generic drug subgroup is expected to develop at a relatively impressive rate in both Russia and Ukraine between 2011 and 2013. According to our forecasts, this subgroup in Russia will grow by 20% on average per annum, whereas in Ukraine it will develop by 31%, assuming a constant euro to local currency exchange rate. These figures are much higher than those of other CEE countries.

Market commentary by expert

Because of Pharma 2020 programme regulations, designed to support local production, an increasing number of pharmaceutical companies are deciding to open their production facilities in Russia . The total amount invested by pharmaceutical manufacturers in the country could reach at least €1bn, according to our estimates. In our opinion, the domestic production in Russia is to focus mainly on biosimilars and high-standard generics, so the share of innovative medicines in the market, which is one of the lowest in Europe, is not to increase significantly. Also in Ukraine the generic drug segment is to develop faster than the original one in the coming years, i.e. between 2011 and 2013.
