Extract from this report

  • In 2011 and 2012 the trends which boosted generic sales in 2010, including price pressure and other restrictive measures, will continue. This is why the generic market will develop more rapidly than its original counterpart in these years .
  • Despite some advances in recent years, access to healthcare innovations such as latest generation therapies or modern diagnostic equipment is seriously insufficient in Poland and remains a major challenge for the country’s healthcare system .
  • According to companies present on the market, there is not much space for investments and launching new drugs on the Czech pharmaceutical market. Also, in 2010 the climate for manufacturers of prescription drugs reimbursed from the public health insuranc e funds, was not amiable. It refers to the market-wide 7% cuts in the drug prices introduced on 1 January 2010 and further drug reimbursement reviews that in majority cases reduced either the maximum drug prices and/or their reimbursements.

Market commentary by expert

According to our estimates, in 2010 the generic drug market in Central Europe increased by 12%, whereas that of original medicines grew at a rate of around 10% in euro terms. In the coming years, the rate of growth for generic medicines may also be higher than that for the innovative drug sector. The trends which boosted generic sales in 2010, being a result of countries’ cost-saving policies, including price pressure and other restrictive measures, will since continue.
