Extract from this report

  • Construction output in the Czech Republic fell by 0.9% year on year in 2009. This followed several consecutive years of growth but was largely expected due to the difficult economic conditions being experienced and the natural decline in demand that this implied.

  • Largely as a result of the economic downturn, the government has been forced to reduce spending on civil engineering construction, with transport infrastructure works being hardest hit.

Market commentary by expert

Last year, due to fiscal restrictions, spending on infrastructure development was cut substantially, leading to a sharp decline in the overall construction activity in the Czech Republic. 2011 is set to see an improvement in this area, although government budget cuts will continue to be felt and further job losses will be seen in the construction industry. Ovecoming the problems with financing of transport infrastructure projects is crucial for the recovery of the Czech construction sector.
