  • The slowdown of the Russian retail market is a direct consequence of the political tension with Ukraine and the ensuing economic sanctions against Russia as well as the counter-measures enforced by Russia. The drop in the price of oil also contributed negatively to the economic situation in the country.
  • We expect slower growth for 2015 in every segment, but growth will still be driven by the grocery and cosmetics segments.
  • The Russian retail market is dominated by large companies and their share has been rising for years.

"The slowdown of the Russian retail market is a direct consequence of the political tension with Ukraine and the ensuing economic sanctions against Russia, the counter-measures enforced by Russia, as well as oil prices decline. Despite the lower growth rate and all the administrative measures, the large population and relatively low development level still make the Russian retail market a promising target for future investment in the medium term. Nevertheless, the growth rate of the retail market in Russia will be lower than before crisis, and retailers in some market segments will experience major problems."
