Extract from this report

  • 2010 became the year of recovery of the demand for shopping centres, both in Moscow and other regions of Russia. As a result, the share of vacant spaces shrank, while rents started to grow. The growing demand caused increased activity among construction companies. However, the construction of all shopping centres opened in 2010 was initiated before the financial crisis.
  • The Russian grocery retail market is dominated by local retailers. The leader of the market is X5 Retail Group, which implements a multi-format strategy. It is followed by Tander, developing Magnit discounters and hypermarkets.

Market commentary by expert

The retail market in Russia has begun to reveal signs of recovery after the financial crisis. In 2010, the retail market increased by almost 13% compared to the previous year and amounted to RUB 16.5tr ($543.5m). From 2011, the sector will achieve double-digit growth; however, in the short-term perspective the market is unlikely to reach the pace demonstrated before the crisis.
Nevertheless, the Russian retail market, with its vast size, expanding purchasing power derived from the large population and good potential for growth, remains one of the most attractive retail markets in global terms.
