Extract from this report

  • Poland and Hungary account for the most substantial proportions because of the relative affluence of society, the large populations, and the relatively efficient reforms (Poland), along with the substantial amount spent on drugs (Hungary). Between 2014 and 2020, Slovakia and the Czech Republic will record the most substantial reductions in market share in the wake of unfavourable reforms and market saturation. This will also pertain to Hungary, but, worthy of note, the share of private services as a proportion of this value will be reduced at the expense of drugs.
  • The figures show some fluctuations in public spending for 2009-2012 for all analysed countries in the wake of single decisions of governments. This is the reason for the difficulties in the prediction of the trends. It is significant that the private market in Slovakia and the Czech Republic has stagnated, but the public spending figure is very high in comparison with those of other countries. In the Czech Republic, the highest figure is that of the Central European counties but, at the same time, the value of the private market is significant. The forecast for Romania has been reined in because of the flat public spending on healthcare in 2014 (and possibly even a reduction) and 2015. In Slovakia the drop will be caused by reduction in public health insurance deductions from people with low incomes, which will deprive the healthcare system of €150m.

Market commentary by expert

The dilapidated healthcare infrastructure has continued to remain a serious problem across the entire Central and Eastern Europe. The modernisation of public healthcare facilities has been slow across the region. Over the past few years, public healthcare systems have been badly underfunded. This is one of the reasons for which there has been an increase in the number of patients choosing private healthcare over its public counterpart and prospects for private healthcare remain bright.
