Extract from this report

  • Poland’s private health insurance market continues to be very immature relative to western countries, and the past year did not see much to change this. The market still awaits legislation that would provide a framework for the development of the current system.
  • Today Poland is seeing the establishment by medical providers of their private medical operations and back offices, expanding not only the patient base, but also investing in tangible assets – buildings, diagnostics laboratories, doctor’s offices, primarily in the outpatient segment. Though investment outlays slowed a bit in 2010, in 2011 a number of medical providers have announced plans of development in this area, including Medicover Group, Enel-Med, Scanmed, Swissmed and Polmed.
  • The structure of private spending on healthcare has remained fairly unchanged over the recent years, with spending on drugs and medical equipment accounting for the largest percentage share of private spending on healthcare (59%).

Market commentary by expert

In 2010 the private healthcare market in Poland expanded by around 4% year on year to PLN 28.8bn. This was the lowest annual growth since 2005, primarily caused by the detrimental impact of the economic crisis. Yet, notably, all segments posted growth, with the best, double-digit increase noted in the sector of medical services subscription and health insurance, and the lowest increase in the medicines and medical equipment fees segment. According to our forecasts, the private healthcare market will be worth PLN 34.4bn in 2013.
