The report gives readers the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the current state of the Russian energy market, which has recently been subject to a large-scale reform – in fact the world’s largest energy market reform to date. These reformatory and liberalisation efforts were aimed at the replacement of aged equipment at power plants with new gear and the commissioning of new, high-tech generating capacity in order to meet future demand expected to grow by 50% by 2030. The report provides a wealth of information about the investments planned in the coming years, including thermal, hydro, and nuclear power projects. It also sheds some light on how generating companies, contractors, engineering firms, building materials producers and power generation equipment manufacturers could benefit from the up-and-coming surge in power sector investment.

Extract from this report

  • Russia’s power generation infrastructure is in need of comprehensive modernization.
  • According to the Ministry of Energy, the energy consumption of the country’s GDP is two and a half times that of the world average, and up to three and a half times higher that of developed countries.
  • The average age of the equipment used in Russia’s power plants is 32 years. The average wear and tear level of power sector infrastructure is currently around 65%.

Market commentary by expert

In spite of ramped up investment in the last few years, Russia’s power sector infrastructure continues to be largely dilapidated and in need of both modernization and expansion. Thus, more than $25bn annually needs to be invested in the sector.  Failing  this, it may prove impossible to satisfy future demand for electricity, which is predicted to increase by nearly 30% by 2020 and by more than 50% over the next two decades.

Robert Obetkon, Construction sector Analyst
