The present report has been prepared on the basis of an extensive database of construction projects analysed and monitored by PMR experts working as part of the PMR Investments team.

The report’s authors have also taken care to make the report stand out from other studies available in the market. To this end, they have implemented a diverse range of measures including:

  • presentation of statistical data supported by expert commentaries
  • presentation of market trends
  • identification of growth forecasts
  • review of actions of major market players
  • explanation of price trends reflected in the concluded contracts
  • discussion of planned and ongoing projects in power sector construction.

Did you know that...

  • The age structure of power generation units in Poland shows a clear negative pattern – more than 40% of turbine generator sets and boilers are over 30 years old.
  • The total value of investment projects in the power sector, regardless of preparation or implementation status, amounts to PLN 142bn.
  • Power companies tend to schedule their projects for completion in 2019, which is almost three years past the originally projected date.
  • Major waste incinerators are already under construction – facilities are underway in Bydgoszcz, Bialystok, Krakow, Konin, Szczecin and Poznan.
  • CCGT units represent a significant part of the planned investment projects – four large-scale projects are currently in the tender stage.
  • The location the projects is typical for the location of the main administrative units of the country – most projects are based in the Mazowieckie region and the most densely populated voivodship of Slaskie.

Extract from this report

  • We expect that the sector covered in the report will see growth of approximately 10% in 2015, which should be viewed as a good result due to a high base of comparison. Growth should also be seen in 2016-2018 as the sector will be driven mostly by the major power unit construction projects that are currently underway.
  • In terms of value, coal-fired capacity represents the majority of investments due to the launch of three large projects in Opole, Jaworzno and Kozienice (nearly PLN 19bn in total). The Kozienice unit will be the first to be placed in service – the construction work is expected to be completed in 2017, while the Jaworzno and Opole projects will generate orders for the construction industry up until 2019.

Market commentary by expert

The year 2014 was a breakthrough year for investments in the heavy industry, including power engineering projects. The heavy industry market grew at a double-digit rate last year, mostly due to the anticipated large-scale investment projects that have been postponed for many years. Most of these projects are planned for the 2017-2018 period, so the market can see a major correction in 2018-2019, largely as a result of a high base of comparison. It is likely that the expected delays in the implementation of some projects will somewhat modify the upward trend in 2015-2016, but, on the other hand, they will also flatten the trajectory of the trend, which will result in a more even distribution of output over the subsequent years. The value of projects for the development of new conventional power generation facilities planned for the coming years amounts to about PLN 100bn.
