  • As predicted by our forecasts in the previous edition of the report, the OTC product market in the CIS region declined by around 10% in 2014. The key reason was the difficult political and economic situation and the depreciation of local currencies (in local currency, all of the markets grew significantly, but mainly because of the very high inflation figure).
  • Only the OTC drug market in Ukraine will grow more rapidly between 2015 and 2020 than between 2012 and 2014. All other markets will witness a slowdown in the average annual growth rate.

"In 2014 and the first half of 2015, the pharmaceutical markets in the CIS countries were strongly affected by the political and economic instability. In particular, this influenced the OTC markets, where patients make their own decisions concerning purchases of products. In all three analysed countries, the OTC markets increased significantly in terms of value, but this was driven by a rise in product prices rather than a hike in volume sales/consumption or positive epidemiological/consumer trends. In fact, patients bought considerably fewer OTC products, which was reflected in significant market drops in terms of volume."
