Extract from this report

  • In 2011 the value of the IT market in Poland rose to PLN 27.9bn; its growth reached the level of 7.6%. Forecasts for the software market were confirmed, while the value of IT services was approx. PLN 0.3bn lower than expected.
  • 2011 was a positive year for the IT market. Despite the lower than initially expected growth rate, the industry finished the year with clear profit, higher than the year before, and maintained the positive trend.
  • The key events for the Polish IT industry were the takeover attempt of Sygnity by Asseco, which eventually was not carried out, and financial problems of one of the major IT distributors in Poland – Vobis. It is also worth noting that last year saw the creation of the Ministry of Administration and Digitization.

Market commentary by expert

Last year – as we had expected – the Polish IT market expanded. Eventually, the growth reached altogether 7.6%, which means an improvement compared to 2010. What is worth noting, IT vendors saw the spending of public administration and local governments increasing. Moderate optimism is also noticeable in the opinions expressed by small and medium-sized enterprises. Most of the 800 SMEs PMR canvassed in the first quarter of this year assumed that their IT outlays would remain on the same level in 2012. Interestingly, last year the situation was similar – in most SMEs spending did not change. The situation is somewhat different in large companies – some IT projects and implementations are critical to those businesses. The life and relevance of solutions are limited, determined by both the economy and the scale of activity, as well as, frequently, no less important security reasons. As a result, in the context of the general turmoil and economic slump, enterprises are still planning key IT investments and projects, but are more determined in negotiating the conditions of such contracts.
There is no doubt the macroeconomic situation in Europe influences the Polish market – the present apathy and stalemate over the situation in Greece and, potentially, in other countries, will be finally resolved either with the introduction of a tough reforms regime or even the break-up of the entire Eurozone. The question remains how much time the present efforts will take, aimed at solving the problems with less radical methods. In theory it is also possible to seek capital and guarantees in the Far East. Taking into account the above factors we believe it is too early to significantly revise down our forecasts for the IT market although, obviously, they are poorer than a year before.
