Extract from this report

  • The civil engineering construction continued to lead among the construction segments. It accounted in 2014 for over 46% of construction output. The share of the civil engineering in the total construction output grew by 1.7 p.p. in 2014.
  • The SZDC, the railway construction investment authority in the country, has an all-time record high budget for 2015, three times that of the previous year. The road construction commissioning body also operates with growing budgets. The environment-related construction is also adding to this growth, as sewage and wastewater construction projects are due to be launched by water supply operators in the next few years.
  • The Czech authorities were much more active in 2014 in adopting legal provisions which would help the construction industry. They focused on adopting laws which would help to speed up tenders for construction orders and reduce the scope for third parties to intervene in construction projects and delay them.

Market commentary by expert

In 2014 construction output in the Czech Republic increased by 3.5% year on year to over CZK 400bn (€15bn). This figure was still approximately one-quarter lower than that of 2008, when the economic crisis erupted. The growth of Czech total construction output is likely to continue in 2015-2016, but it will remain modest. The substantial investments in transport infrastructure construction are expected to boost civil engineering construction output in the next five years.
