Market commentary by expert

“In the last few years, the relationship between Belarus and the European Union improved somewhat, particularly due to the role the country played in the Ukraine peace talks, prompting EU officials to state publicly that there was now an opportunity to broaden and deepen the Union’s relationship with Belarus. Furthermore, Belarus became more open to foreign investors. In 2016, the World Bank’s 2017 Doing Business Report ranked Belarus in 37th place among 190 countries in terms of the ease of doing business, which is a noteworthy improvement from the 44th place ascribed to Belarus in 2015 and 57th in 2014.

Despite the fact that the construction industry experienced double-digit contraction in 2015 and 2016, the prospects for the Belarusian construction industry remain relatively good, particularly in the medium-to-long term. It should be noted that the lack of economic growth in Belarus in 2015 and 2016 was caused mostly by the recession in Russia, its main trading market, and, to a lesser extent, by domestic structural weaknesses and rigidities. Nevertheless, the former is very likely to substantially ease over the next few years. Political tensions between Russia and developed countries are expected to ease gradually from 2017 onwards, which will ultimately initiate an economic recovery in Belarus.”
