Extract from this report

  • In 2009, 51 plants produced cement in Russia, and their average capacity utilisation rate exceeded 57%. The total production capacity of Russian cement plants is about 77 million tonnes.

  • There are 8 producers operating on the Ukrainian cement market. These producers operate a combined total of 14 cement plants, which, together, have a combined annual capacity of 20 million tonnes.

  • Uzbekistan is currently the third-largest producer of cement among the CIS countries, after Russia and Ukraine. Uzbekistan is also one of the largest exporters of cement in the CIS zone.

Market commentary by expert

After the difficult 2009, cement markets in former Soviet Union countries have seen some improvement so far this year, with a full recovery to pre-crisis levels expected in most countries in 2011-2012. In anticipation of increasing demand thanks to a pick-up in construction activity, massive cement production capacity upgrade programmes have been rolled out in several countries, aimed at replacing cement imports with domestic production or boosting cement export capacity.
