Clinical Trials in Russia: a market worth noticing in the coming years

2008-05-12

According to PMR, a research and consulting firm, some 38,000 patients participated in clinical trials in Russia in 2007. PMR expects continuing high interest among pharmaceutical companies and Contract Research Organisations (CROs) in conducting clinical trials in this area in the years 2008-2009.

Foreign companies to be attracted by low costs and fast recruitment

According to PMR’s just-released report “Clinical Trials in Russia 2008”, over half of the interviewees (decision makers from companies present on the market) surveyed specially for the purpose of this report foresaw no change in the good situation in the sector of clinical trials in Russia in 2008. The most important characteristics of clinical trials in Russia are relatively low costs and fast recruitment of patients. However, some respondents expected the market climate to improve even further. Only two companies thought the opposite, i.e., that the conditions for clinical research in Russia would deteriorate over 2008. “It seems market players believe that interest in conducting clinical trials in Russia among foreign companies will remain strong in 2008. Some companies are counting on the simplification of legal regulations affecting clinical trials and the implementation of international standards such as GCP.”, Monika Stefanczyk, a co-author of the report explained.

i3 and Chiltern enter Russian clinical research market

Respondents of PMR’s survey who gave positive assessments of the current market situation said that there are more and more sponsors (pharmaceutical companies) interested in conducting clinical trials in Russia. As a consequence, there are also more and more CROs offering to organise clinical trials at Russian sites. Two of the latest examples are i3 and Chiltern, global CROs which have recently decided to enter the Russian clinical research market.

As a result the market is expanding at the average pace of 20% year-on-year. There were also respondents who said that the quality of research is improving (clinical trials are being organised faster and more efficiently in Russia). Some respondents also mentioned the excellent qualifications of medical staff (researchers) as well as their relevant experience. Over 60% of Russian clinical investigators have PhD credentials, with some 40% of them teaching at major universities.
