Chinese retailers revise opening plans - January 2009

The credit crunch is bringing new challenges to China, both in the retail environment and the manufacturing sector. The country’s rapid economic growth, low unemployment and growing affluence of society all mean that the Chinese retail market, already huge, in theory, has strong potential for further growth. The market is continuously evolving, mostly due to the expansion of foreign chains, frequent takeovers and changes in the purchasing habits of Chinese consumers. With a downturn in the economic climate, however, retailers in China are being forced to re-examine their development and expansion strategies.
