For a long time, the retail sector in Ukraine kept aloof from the processes of globalisation and regionalisation. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the nineties, domestic companies have maintained the leading positions in this second most populous former Soviet republic. This situation is quite different from that of the countries of Central Europe, such as Poland, Hungary or Romania.
