State refund policy undercutting growth on Poland
In 2006 pharmacy sales of pharmaceuticals in Poland totalled PLN 20.4bn (€5.2bn), 7.9% more than in 2005. However, 2007 PMR expects market growth to weaken by around 2.5% to give final sales of PLN 21bn (€5.5bn). The more sober forecast is due to the state’s refund policy, which favours sales of cheaper medications, as well as a result of strike action among healthcare personnel, one by-product of which has been a decline in the number of prescriptions issued in 2007.
